Background of Ittehad Foundation

Since its inception in 1947, Pakistan has been facing numerous challenging like poor governance, low literacy rate, lack of implementation of laws, corruption, unemployment and inflation. The practice of gender biasness and women exploitation in form of traditions and culture is the problem that has deep roots in the history of the Indian sub-continent. There is not still any policy reform that could eliminate the exploitation of women rights in rural areas of Punjab. The status of urban women as compared to the rural women is quite well. Women are exploited in the name of forefathers’ culture and tradition; gender based false notions, stereotyping, social stigmas, and powerlessness in so called male dominant society. The key reason of all this is low literacy rate of women in these areas. This low literacy rate is further cause of attitude of people, unavailability of adequate educational facilities for girls, improper knowledge and understanding of certain laws among the mess, unawareness about gender laws and rights, poverty, and less efficient government departments. All these problems has given rise to various social issues like women abuse, child abuse, domestic violence, divorce rate, and social exclusion of certain groups. It has made the life of women, children and youth more vulnerable.
Under such miserable scenario, Ittehad foundation was founded by highly motivated and inspired group of eight individual to address these challenges practically and systematically. After some period of informal small scale self funded interventions, this group involved many other like-minded people and formed an organization named ‘Ittehad Foundation’. This organization was formally registered with Directorate of Social Welfare Punjab in 2001 under Voluntary Social Welfare Agencies (registration & control ordinance, 1961 (XLVI of 1961).
